Why Long Hair?

When I was a child, I saw Randy Santiago performing on TV with his shades that exuded enigma and his long glamorous hair. I said to my father, “I want to have long hair too.” Father replied, “You’re too young for that, son.”

So I grew up, graduated college and had a job in an office. When I refrained from going to the barbershop, father noticed that my hair was growing longer. As he stared I asked, “Why father, Am I not big enough to have long hair?” He said, “It does not suit you… you work in an office.” Well, it was a good thing that the company allowed us to work in whatever hairstyle we like.

So finally, I quit my job and worked as a home-based web content writer. I’m older now and I do not work in an office anymore, so father no longer has any reasons to stop me from growing my hair - even if Randy Santiago already switched to short hair.

There are still instances when people ask why long hair. During those moments, I always found myself thinking about reasons. Not that there is none. In fact, there are too many. And today I managed to buy some time to really think about my reasons, which could also be your reasons, for keeping your hair long.

This is me. Putting too much attention on the engineering and architecture of my hair through the use of gels and wax is just too tiring. I just wanted to hop out of the shower, dry my hair, get dressed, comb a little and get off. I just wanted to wear my hair naturally and look normal. I wanted to be myself.

Long hair is normal. If you’re fond of animals - well even if you don’t – you will notice that humans are the only animals that can grow long hair. Yes, lions and horses have their manes but they grow only to a limited length. They can never surpass our hair growth that can go beyond two feet. Being long hair is being human enough.

Long hair is healthy. That’s because you cannot grow your hair long, in the first place, if you are not properly nourished. Hair is composed mostly of protein. Without this nutrient, your hair will get thin and will become prone to breakage, split ends. In addition, hair falls easily if you lack iron.

Long hair is practical. Before, when my hair was still short, I used to spend monthly for hair engineering and architecture products. Add to it the expenses for shampoo. Now that my hair is long, I do not need to spend for those products anymore. Also, I used to suffer from dandruff and itchy scalp because of those hair products. When I stopped using them, my dandruff eventually disappeared. Sometimes I still see flakes but only in a minimal level. And my scalp has become healthier too.

I don’t like barbers and hairstylists. But that only pertains to their services. I have no personal grudge against them. They just cannot satisfy me when I tell them how I wanted to look like. They will say okay when I finish my instructions but my haircut results were always the opposite of what I instructed. It is either my hair was cut to short or it was barely cut at all. So I said goodbye scissors.

Now that my hair is long, I have freed myself from these problems. But being long hair has some challenges too. I will tell you my story about it some other day. For now, these are my main reasons for growing my hair. I hope that you find your reasons too and stop going to the barbershop today.
